In Croatia smoking in bars is forbidden again

Many tourists will also this summer visit Croatian coastline, therefore it will be useful to remind them that smoking in Croatian bars is again generally forbidden. Today the prohibition again entered into force in all those bars that did not decide to adjust to the demands in law prescribed for smoking bars (there was a six months transitional period). In Croatia owners of the bars can decide what kind of bar they will have, non-smoking or smoking, but have to fulfill some conditions for the latter.

Places smaller than 50m2 needed to build-in special ventilation system and for larger bars the law foresees divided rooms for smokers and non-smokers. Only in this way can bar get the title 'smoking bar' by Croatian Ministry of Health.
From around 16.000 officially registered bars in whole Croatia, only 156 smaller and 5 larger bars decided to re-built their premises and get the special allowance that enables smoking in the bar.
As it can be heard from the Association of bars most of the bar owners did not decide for changes while the ventilation systems are so expensive. For smaller bar a cost is said to be around 30.000 eur, which does not pay off for them.
In last days there were many reports that Inspection service is checking the respect for the law in bars around Croatia. Law foresees 137 eur of penalty for each guest that lit the cigarette in non-smoking bar and from 68 to 137 eur of penalty for the waiter that did not stop the guest from smoking.
